The National Ice Hockey Championship is committed to a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for everyone involved in the competition — players, officials, volunteers, team staff and spectators.

1. Our commitment

Everyone has the right to take part in sport free from abuse, harm, discrimination or neglect. Safeguarding is not delegated to one person: it is the responsibility of every member of the league.

2. Who this applies to

  • Players, including all under-18s and vulnerable adults
  • Coaches and team staff
  • Officials, referees and scorekeepers
  • Volunteers, organisers and league officers

3. Principles

  • The welfare of children and vulnerable adults is paramount.
  • Every participant is treated with respect and dignity.
  • Every concern is taken seriously, recorded, and acted upon.
  • We work in line with current UK safeguarding guidance.

4. Responsibilities

The league will

  • Provide a safe environment at every sanctioned fixture.
  • Require a named parent or guardian on the record for every registered player under 18.
  • Require current DBS clearance for all coaches and team staff.
  • Respond to safeguarding concerns promptly and confidentially.
  • Promote good practice among clubs and officials.

All members must

  • Treat others with respect, on and off the ice.
  • Report concerns or incidents without delay.
  • Follow league rules and the code of conduct below.

5. Reporting a concern

Report any safeguarding concern immediately to a league official or to the safeguarding lead. Concerns are handled confidentially and shared only with those who need to know.

If a child or vulnerable person is in immediate danger, call 999 first. Tell the safeguarding lead as soon as it is safe to do so.

6. Safeguarding lead

The league has a designated safeguarding lead responsible for managing concerns, keeping records and ensuring best practice.

7. Code of conduct

  • No bullying, harassment or discrimination of any kind.
  • Respect officials, opponents, team-mates and spectators.
  • Promote fair play and positive behaviour, especially around junior players.
  • No photography or filming of junior players without guardian consent.

8. Review

This policy is reviewed annually, and after any incident that suggests a change is needed, to ensure it remains effective and compliant.
